Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade

The Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade (CAWAT) is a non-governmental, independent research, information and publishing enterprise established in Moscow, Russia, in February 2010.  The Centre is presently staffed with Russia's best professional analysts and science workers possessing ample practical skills and research experience in such areas as arms exports and arms market analysis.

Basic activities conducted by the CAWAT are as follows:

  • research and analysis of international military expenditures;
  • research and analysis of military-economic potentials of countries all over the world;
  • research and analysis of international and regional arms markets;
  • research and analysis of international arms exports;
  • research and analysis of international arms imports;
  • research and analysis in the field of war economy and defence industrial complex;
  • bespoke expert and analytical studies performed on orders of third party organisations and individuals;
  • rendering of consulting, advisory and information services;
  • analysis of weapons upgrading programmes in countries all over the world;
  • management of international and regional arms market data bases;
  • other types of activities.

The activities of the Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade are conducted under two main product lines: periodical editions and customized projects made on orders of third party organisations.

The periodical editions include:

  • annual publications, namely the CAWAT Yearbook (more than 1,200 pages per volume) containing a comprehensive statistical analysis of the world arms trade for an eight-year period.  In particular, the CAWAT Yearbook 2009, offered now for subscription, provides statistical data on the world arms trade for the period from 2001 to 2008, whereas the next CAWAT Yearbook 2010 will cover the period from 2002 to 2009, and so forth.  As preparation of a detailed fundamental analysis of the world arms market requires rather a long time, new editions of the CAWAT Yearbook will appear every year in August providing data on the preceding year and the entire eight-year period. To many subscribers who are keen on receiving early data on the last year's results, the Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade proposes, as an annual supplement to the yearbook, a special edition of the World Arms Trade monthly magazine (more than 200 pages per issue) appearing every year in February and containing a tentative analysis of the past year's initial results. Subscription for this special edition should be made separately.
  • monthly publications, namely the World Arms Trade analytical journal (more than 100 pages per issue).
  • weekly publications, namely the Monitor international military technical review (more than 30 pages per issue).
  • daily information delivered as a fresh news roundup tape.

The comprehensive approach to the nomenclature of the planned products allows the Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade to satisfy diverse requirements of its customers to the greatest extent.

Within its special projects line of activities the Centre for Analysis of World Arms Trade carries out bespoke studies on third party specifications calling for more detailed investigation into particular problems in the field of military technical cooperation and arms exports than its periodical editions usually provide.

It can be both a research into arms supplies under contracts already completed (up to 15 years ago) and an arms market value forecast for various periods of three, five, ten and even more years to come, for various types of arms and military equipment, and for various regions  and countries.

On customer requests the CAWAT can also provide data on any country's major armament programmes (including arms imports as well as its own production), armed forces structure and equipment.

Market studies are made for conventional types of weapons.

Other research options are possible in accordance with a concrete customer's request.
